Reflections by Jill - A Weekly Commentary for OLTL for October 15, 2007

REFLECTIONS BY JILL for October 15, 2007

Well, I guess I’ll have to get to Todd Manning, but I’ll leave him for later since the thought of him is more than disturbing to me.

This week I have to talk about Langston. I have been waiting patiently for this young woman to have a good storyline because it has been evident from the minute we saw her that she had great potential. I wasn’t wrong and she did not disappoint me last week. I know that many fans, especially those that have been watching the show for a very long time, suffer through the youthful storylines. To me, this is a wonderful exception. Brittany Underwood does such a great job of portraying Langston’s emotions that she had me crying in every scene.

What a horrible thing for a teenager to go through, knowing her parents have been dead for a year and a half and trying to survive on her own, handling a household by herself and going to school. I think the most poignant thing she said was in response to Dorian’s question about why she didn’t even tell Starr the truth when she said, “I felt like if I told people the truth it would mean that it really happened.” Langston tried so hard to keep up the pretense even when she knew that Dorian knew the whole truth. Who could blame Langston for being terrified of going to foster care?

And let’s talk about Dorian for a minute. She always does this to me. Just when I think she has been so obnoxious that I can’t stand her any more, she goes and does something straight from the heart. Darn you Dorian! LOL! It was about time that someone took notice of the fact that this young woman seemed completely on her own and no one had ever seen her parents. It wouldn’t even be acceptable if they were still alive and left her on her own so much of the time. I found it ridiculous that when Markko finally brought up the subject of Langston’s parents to Starr, that she didn’t think it was strange long before this that she has never even seen her best friend’s parents. It was very kind of Dorian to take her in and it was lovely to see how Starr took care of her and made her feel at home. It won’t go too smoothly for Langston when Brittany gets wind of the fact that she’s been living on her own all this time and reports her to Social Services. This has to be the most vicious thing Brittany has done yet. Langston will be taken away and put in foster care, but she will run away and Blair will make a plea to become her guardian. I think Blair should get a hold of Brittany and give her a taste of what she deserves for Langston as well as for Starr. It’s too bad you can’t bop somebody else’s kid because Blair would be the perfect candidate to handle this little witch.

Okay, on to Todd (gag, gag). I think that judge needs his head examined. Todd’s behavior before the decision was disgusting and it was no better after he won custody of Tommy. This is why I think he is missing about 90% of what I consider a compassionate, human heart. Yes, I know he was looking for Tommy for a long time and thought he was dead, but the fact remains that even though Michael kept the secret about Tommy’s paternity, that baby only knows Michael and Marcie as his parents and nowhere in this whole court fiasco has Todd even mentioned that he has any concerns about Tommy’s adjustment to being ripped away from the only parents he knows. He was rude to the judge; he was more than rude to Marcie and Michael’s lawyer, calling her a bitch in open court; and yet the judge figured that just because Todd made such an effort to find his son, he should have him. I wonder if the judge was rethinking his decision when he suggested that Todd maintain a relationship with Marcie and Michael for Tommy’s sake and Todd responded, “Yeah, whatever, when do I get him?” Sure, that’s the way a concerned parent should behave, right? And Todd was horrible to John when he was walking out of the courtroom, looked John in the face and said, “So much for you being an uncle, John. I hope you took pictures.” Todd is just disgusting. Have I said that yet? Well, it bears repeating over and over.

I don’t think Marcie did the right thing by running away with Tommy and now that she has crossed the state line into New Jersey she’s going to dig herself an even deeper hold. Her brother Ron is going to help her get a new identity and start a new life and he will be arrested for helping her when the FBI catches him. But let’s be real here. The judge gave them one hour to say goodbye to Tommy and Marcie was already beside herself with grief after hearing the judge’s decision in court. How was she supposed to process everything in an hour, let alone deal with the fact that her husband has been lying to her for months and made this situation worse than it could have been, if that’s possible? At this point, Marcie doesn’t trust anyone, especially Michael. And honestly, I feel bad for Michael because he loves Tommy just as much as Marcie does and because of his bad judgment in keeping that secret, he now realizes that he may have just lost his wife along with his son. It’s a really horrible mess and in the center of it is the biggest moron in Llanview, Todd Manning. Is there anyone out there who can stand that gloating grin of his and the fact that he laughs in the face of everyone else’s pain?

Todd never learns when to keep his mouth shut and think first. It seemed like Michael was at least making some headway in talking to Marcie on the phone and then Todd had to get on the phone and threaten her like the crazed maniac he is. Hey, if I were Marcie, I’d step even harder on the gas pedal once I heard that lunatic on the phone. Did Todd even stop to consider the fact that Blair, Starr and Jack were waiting at home for him to arrive with Tommy for a celebration? He’d been gone for hours and hadn’t even thought to call Blair or Starr to let them know what was happening. What is wrong with this picture?
