REFLECTIONS BY JILL for December 17, 2007

From Jill Berry, for About.com

Don’t you get sick of all the near misses we have to endure on soaps? I’ll bet that Michael could have been standing face to face with Marcie and the writers would have figured out a way to make her disappear before he could get his hands on her and Tommy. Gigi sure wasn’t very convincing when she tried to make Michael believe that Marcie was never there and she didn’t know anything about her. Michael is way too smart to have fallen for that act, but of course he did. It’s totally ridiculous that Marcie keeps getting by without being caught and I’m so tired of it already. I was really annoyed that when Marcie was standing in that bathroom listening to Michael pour his heart out to Gigi, she just couldn’t finally bring herself to open the door and give up. Letting him get arrested for failing to appear in court without even showing her face was too much. After all the hiding she has done, now she thinks it’s okay to leave Tommy with someone who is a stranger to her and work in the diner where tons of people can see her. It gets dumber by the day and even I am getting tired of hearing Marcie go off on her little hysterical tirades. Those shrill little rants just grate on my nerves after a while. Enough is enough.

So John saves the day and Miles’ life. Obviously his main objective is to protect Cole so I wasn’t surprised that he searched the river to find Miles in the hopes that he would still be alive. Cole would have been in a world of hurt if Miles had died after Cole shot him whether or not it was accidental. I really felt sorry for poor Cole. This kid has been through it all since he came to Llanview and now he’s on the run, which is not too smart. Leave it to Starr and Langston to hide him at Langston’s house. I guess if anyone would be good at evading the cops it would be Starr. After all, look who her role model is. Cole is so upset he doesn’t know which way to turn but he does have the good moral instinct to know that he needs to turn himself in, especially since he knows that John took the blame for the shooting. Starr’s first impulse was to tell him, “My dad says to never admit anything to a cop.” At least there’s a lot more of everyone else in Starr than there is of her dad. I guess Starr was beside herself with the fear that Cole would go to jail, but it was harsh of her to take it out on Langston. And by the way, I was puzzled when that realtor showed up at Langston’s house with a prospective buyer. Who is the owner who is selling the house? Wasn’t Langston the only beneficiary of her parents’ estate? Shouldn’t it be hers?

Speaking of Langston, I loved her scenes with Cole where the two of them were able to relate so much to each other because they had both lost their parents and were basically alone in the world except for friends. It was hard to see Langston have to take in the fact that her home was going to be sold and all the things that were memories of her parents would be gone. It was a very poignant moment when Cole asked her when it stops hurting and she said she’s still hurting but she’s finally realizing that she has her own life to live and that doing that is the best way to honor her parents’ memory. I’m so glad they kept this young actress on the show. I think she’s a great addition.

So back to John. You can tell he’s back to his typical black mood when he throws caution to the wind and determined to save Cole, refutes Ramsey’s story about Cole shooting Miles So he tells Bo he was the one who did the shooting. Hey, I don’t mind John giving Ramsey a hard time at all. That guy deserves a lot more, but with the mood John is in, he doesn’t care what happens to him, even when Bo tells him that lying could cost him everything. I hated it when John said, “I’ve already lost everything.” John didn’t take too much time to bounce back from nearly losing his life in that car accident when he pushed Natalie away (after she gave him everything) and went on to forge a relationship with Marty even though they started as adversaries. John’s relationships and friendships with Evangeline and Natalie were a lot more serious and deep that his relationship with Marty and although I am sorry that Marty was killed (supposedly), John should have his wits about him enough to tell the truth and stand behind Cole to face whatever is to come. Cole doesn’t need John lying for him. Didn’t John learn his lesson by lying for Michael when he covered up his knowledge of Tommy’s paternity?

And there is Natalie running to Miles’ side. I guess he needs someone to care about him and he doesn’t even know yet that Roxy is crazy about him. I guess he’s about to find that our, especially now that Roxy has shown up at the hospital. That was some slam in the face she gave John when she found out that he confessed to shooting Miles. John can’t catch a break. Wow, that’s a weird pair huh? Roxy and Miles? We haven’t ever really seen Roxy hung up on a man. Oh, there was Nigel, LOL, but that was more humorous than anything else. I did get annoyed at Natalie when she grilled Starr about visiting Miles. I guess someone died and made Natalie the sentry at Miles’ hospital room door. I did laugh at the thought of Natalie trying to intimidate Starr. This kid learned from the master and I just shook my head at Natalie when she burst into Miles’ room and said to Starr, “Miles isn’t supposed to have visitors” and Starr just stared her down and said, “You’re here.” Take that cousin Natty!

I guess we’re now going through one of Todd’s calm periods. How long will this last? He’s one very lucky man and he should remember that a lot more often because Blair, Viki and his kids love him unconditionally and there is nowhere else on this earth that he’d find that if he ever lost it for good.
