Mr. Carey does not play Asa - HE IS ASA. Never for one minute do you believe that this person is not an actual, living, fire breathing, manipulative, fiercely protective (of his family), but sadly misguided person. I could never imagine anyone else ever playing this part, no recast in the world could ever match Phil Carey's "being". He is every inch Asa - the impressive physical bearing, the quietly determined, though often unwittingly ruthless tyrant who protects "his family" in the worst way- quite literally." |

physical attributes are legion - that smile, those dimples, those gorgeous
eyes... But the outer package is but a small measure of the man who brings
Ben Davidson to life. What really draws me to him is his phenomenal
talent. His face is so expressive that he can convey more with one look
than many others can with pages of dialogue. He is a gifted listener, in
that he reacts to his scene partners, as opposed to merely reciting his
lines. His sense of humor keeps me laughing, as I try to pinpoint the
adlibs he's famous for. Last, but certainly not least, he shares
undeniable chemistry with my favorite leading lady, Erika Slezak. He has
freed her character, Viki, in more ways than one. She's no longer on the
backburner, but is now involved in a vibrant, passionate love affair. Mark
Derwin is one half of the best couple in daytime - a pairing that is so
real and so true, that I ! never believe either of these performers are acting." |

In scenes opposite Erika Slezak, the two make Ben and Viki's love for each other so believable, even when they are estranged. It's the little things they do; the look across the room, the simple touch, the smile, the wink. There hasn't been a scene this year that equaled the scene in which Ben hugs his Mother Renee, and a lone tear falls from his gorgeous Brown eye. (Yes, it's a real tear. Mark feeling the moment. I verified this with Patricia Elliott at the OLTL Fan Club Luncheon. She marveled at it as well.) You just have to cry for Ben, loving Renee, yet torn about telling her his heritage because of her husband, his Father. Whether in tearful hugs, or playful scenes with Kevin, Sophie-A or Sam, Mark Derwin knows how to play the scene. The other reason he is my favorite is because of the type of person he is in real life. He is very down to earth, approachable, cute and funny. Can't forget that he is also handsome, HOT and downright sexy! IMHO Mark Derwin is simply the best." |
