A little less than two years from now, David Fumero's (Cristian) contract will be up - and there's a good chance he'll be outta there. So what might come next for the model-turned actor? "Who knows," he muses over lunch. "Go back to school, maybe. I regret not finishing [college]. I went for two years, and was a semester away from getting my associates degree." But, he notes, he doesn't know if he could go back at this point, knowing his age would be quite different from other undergrads. Still, if Fumero went back to college, "there are certain subjects I'd love to study," he reveals. "I'd love to understand politics. Ever since the last elections, I'd like to understand it better."
There is at least one area of politics Fumero understands from personal experience - those of his homeland of Cuba. Ask about Castro, and he darkens. "He is a terrible person. He's killed thousands and thousands and thousands of people."
For now, however, Fumero definitely feels strongly about the American half of his Cuban-American heritage (he moved to Florida with his family at age 8). "I grew up in this country. This is what I know. I can't say I'm 50 percent American and 50 percent Cuban. I'm just a mix. I'm American on my passport. But I always say I'm Cuban, because that's where I was born. But I am American, I have an American passport and this is my country. Especially now."
On Being Recognized: "It's a good feeling when people recognize you and like you, because that says they like your work. At least, I hope it's my work they're happy to see!"
On His New Favorite Movie, Memento: "The end tells you the whole story, which is really cool. I expected to be let down, because it was confusing -- it kept you guessing. But the star, Guy Pearce, he's amazing. He was in L.A. Confidential, and in that he was the perfect cop -- but he was also an idiot. He was too perfect."
