It was perhaps an unexpected win, but nonetheless a wonderful and well-deserved victory for everyone at One Life to Live during the Emmy Awards held on Friday, May 17. While accepting the award, One Life to Live's Executive Producer, Gary Tomlin, summed it up best when he said, "We are stunned and amazed."
OLTL has been nominated for Best Drama before but this is the first time they have won. The show's first nomination for Best Drama came back during the 1972-1973 season, which was also before there was a separate ceremony for daytime television. OLTL's next nomination for Best Drama did not happen for ten years later for the 1982-1983 season, CBS's Guiding Light took home the gold that year. The third time OLTL was nominated for Best Drama was for the 1999-2000 season, however ABC's General Hospital won. For this year's season, many fans, as well as many others in the industry, felt OLTL was shut out of some well-deserved Emmy nominations for several cast members. None of the actors on the show were nominated, and although they were delighted for the nomination for Best Drama, there certainly has been much disappointment in the Emmy selection process. OLTL was nominated for six other awards this year, including Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series, Outstanding Achievement in Technical Direction/Electronic Camera/Video Control For a Drama Series, Outstanding Achievement in Hairstyling, Outstanding Achievement in Makeup, Outstanding Achievement in Music Direction and Composition and Outstanding Original Song. However, none of these categories received the Emmy award this year. So it goes without saying how much winning the award for Best Drama will impact all involved.
